Due to the Halloween Weekend Nor’easter I have had difficulty maintaining our communication lines and responding to you the client efficiently. In order to prevent these difficulties with future emergencies and weather events I am launching a Winter Protection Plan.

All clients enrolled in the Winter Protection Plan will be included in a local inspection route. Then on a bi-weekly basis and with every significant weather event all homes on the route will be checked by one of the Bull Home Improvement crew for any damage or emergencies. Should the inspection find any issues you will receive priority scheduling with an emergency response crew to prevent any further damage to your home. Additionally we will act as a central coordination point for all of your other service providers. This way if our inspection finds an issue with the heating, plumbing, electrical or other specialty systems the appropriate contractor will be notified asap to ensure a rapid response.

My goal is to provide the most efficient response for all future winter weather emergencies and safeguard your home. For further details contact me, Jordan Bull at (203) 293-8466 or email me at info@BullHomeImprovement.com

What if business was a pleasure?

Some times you have no choice but to mix the two.

Over the years I have found that Residential Construction is one of these situations. Myself and my crew spend our working days inside the homes of our clients. This is why it is so important for you as the client to carefully consider who you choose to do business with. But where should you as the client draw then line when choosing the right contractor for your project.
I would suggest that most people don’t draw the line far enough. When considering contractors I believe you should look beyond the basics of testimonials and prior work experience. Factors like these most definitely need to be considered, but in addition to that, how do you “feel” about the contractor.

Envision for a minute how you would like the atmosphere to be during the course of your project. In my experience the most successful projects are those where myself and my crew had a very polite and friendly relationship with the client. So how do you establish this level of relationship or at least recognize its potential among the many bids you have received?

Well, the same way you would feel out any new acquittance in life. Everyone has their own factors that they recognize as the basis of a friendly and comfortable relationship. It can be as simple as your assessment of the persons general mood or as complex as having similar hobbies or interests. Whatever your particular method may be, make sure you factor this in with your choice of contractor.

We at Bull Home Improvement understand that by working with us you are allowing us to be a part of your daily home life. As such we make a continuing effort to make the process as friendly and transparent as possible. I look forward to working with all of my clients, not just for the sake of the project, but to build a long lasting pleasurable business relationship.

The Truth Behind and Old Saying (How to Choose a Contractor Part 1)

You Get What You Pay For

We have all heard this before, but is there any truth behind it?

I have most often heard this as a justification after making a bad purchasing decision. I had tried to save a few dollars or stretch my budget and ended up with less than I had hoped. Even worse, I sometimes had a broken product or worthless service and had wasted all of that money.

But we all know this saying is not 100% true. A smart shopper can make a good decision and get exactly what they want for a reasonable price. So what does it take to be that smart shopper, make the best decision, and get exactly what you want for the right price?

That question is exactly why we are writing a new series of newsletters to teach you the homeowner exactly how to best prepare yourself for these decisions. So for Part 1 we will explore what is the actual truth behind “you get what you pay for” and how does it apply to you as a homeowner.

As a contractor I have come across another applications of that old saying. While we all know that you can always get a higher level of craftsmanship and quality with a slightly higher budget this also applies to how you structure the contract. There are two primary ways to structure a contract. These are the “Fixed Price Contract” and “Time and Materials Contract”.

It has been my experience that when you as the home owner agree to pay for a project based upon the time and materials, that is what you get a lot of time and a lot of materials. While this type of contract does offer the greatest flexibility as the project moves along, it does not place the successful completion of the project as the primary goal.

Alternately if the project is contracted based upon a fixed price for the final goal the priorities for the project are properly aligned with what you need and want from it. Also if set up correctly you will have a clause within the contract allowing you to coordinate with your contractor on any mid-job changes you might like or unexpected obstacles the contractor might encounter.

With this in mind we at Bull Home Improvement always recommend the fixed price contract to our clients. While we are willing to work in whatever capacity best suits your needs, we feel this is most often a fixed price that allows you to make coordinated adjustments if needed.

Since the cost involved in bathroom remodeling is huge enough, there are some factors you need to look into to make it manageable, which are as follows: size, place status, kind of materials, and bathroom contractor. If you are thinking of remodeling your home, see to it that you take all possible things into consideration. The cost involved is as huge as having a house addition; therefore, this has to be carefully planned out.

The most common parts of the house that undergo renovation are the kitchen and the bathroom because these are the two places where wear and tear is pretty obvious. Mildew formation, fungi proliferation, and other forms of degeneration are just some of the reasons why remodeling is necessary. Although one can say that an enormous amount is required, but the exact cost is definitely indeterminable due to several factors, which are as follows:

Size When doing remodeling, most of the contractors charge their clients on a per square foot basis; thus, the larger the area of coverage, the higher would be the cost. However, this is just one factor used in costing since they also need to consider other inclusions.

Place status Talking about the status of the place, it simply means how the area looks prior to onset of the project. Since there are two types of remodeling, partial and complete; as a homeowner you need to determine the extent of the remodeling. When you say partial renovation, the job specifications include repainting, installation of cabinets, addition of lighting and other fixtures. All of these works look manageable; thus, it can even be done by the property owner himself. However, when you talk of complete remodeling, massive demolition, plumbing, replacement of floor tiles, and the like are some of the major works that need professional help. In short, the more extensive the work gets, the more you need a substantial amount for remodeling. Kind of materials The kind of materials utilized greatly influence the cost of the entire project. If you wish to make use of the latest amenities in the construction industry, you have to expect for a high expenditure.

Bathroom contractor As mentioned, there are works that are simple enough to be carried out by home dwellers themselves. Thus if you choose to do it your way, a significant cost cutting is more likely anticipated if you complete some easy jobs in advance prior to hiring a specialist. However if you are in doubt with your capacity, I strongly suggest you take the services of a remodeling contractor. With this alone, the cost may already vary significantly since contractors charge differently. Their rates sometimes depend on their years of experience and the types of clients they usually cater. Therefore, choose your contractor wisely so that you will not experi

What is Ice Damming and how do you prevent it?

You may have noticed long icicles hanging from your gutters and not realize the significance of the damage that may be occurring behind them. Icicles are usually one of the first warning signs of possible ice dams on your roof.

An Ice Damn forms when meltwater flows down the roof, under the blanket of snow, onto the eave and into the gutter, where colder conditions on the overhang cause it to freeze. Eventually, ice accumulates along the eave and in the gutter. Snow that melts later cannot drain properly through the ice on the eave and in the gutter.

This can result in:

Leaking roof (height of leak depends on extent of ice dam).

Wet, ineffective insulation.

Stained or cracked plaster or drywall.

Rotting timber.

Stained, blistered or peeling paint.

Under extreme conditions, with heavy snow and severe cold, almost any house can have an ice dam. *The first step is to address the immediate problem before worrying about any long term preventative or cosmetic repairs. This can be a very simple task.
If you need assistance with ice damming please call Bull Home Improvement on our 24 hour emergency line.
